Our trips are a weeklong course designed for teens (incoming 8th-10th graders) who want to become familiar with the ecology of the Eagle Cap and Hells Canyon Wilderness while learning how to backpack. Teens learn:

  • field research methods
  • minimum impact camping skills
  • wilderness values and its history
  • backpacking skills, including
    • how to use a camp stove and cook in a wilderness setting
    • setting up a tent
    • packing a backpack
    • navigating with a map and compass
    • staying safe in the backcountry

Our Trips Build Confidence in Teens

Our summer backpacking trips guide teens in discovering their place in the wilderness and in social and biological systems. Teens work together, whether it's cooking for the group or helping a friend get up a steep climb. Teens reflect each day through journaling. Around the campfire, we discuss leadership, their role in a wild setting, and analyze wilderness ethic and thought. Teens leave our trips more confident in themselves. Parents confirm that their teens return from our trips more confident in themselves.

Our summer backpacking trips will

  • Develop leadership and teamwork skills, like communication, trust, and respect
  • Build confidence
  • Increase understanding of wilderness and wilderness values
  • Teach backpacking skills
  • Have teens perform research in a wilderness setting for the US Forest Service
